Abstract

This study explores ways of effectively presenting underreported topics in Kazakhstani online media through the use of AI technologies. The media project «Qañtar qursaýynda» was selected as the empirical basis of the research. Information about the victims of the January Events was collected from official reports and open sources. The authenticity of the materials was verified through fact-checking procedures applied to textual, audio, photographic, and video content. Based on the collected data, an audiovisual reconstruction was produced, with each video focusing on the experience of a single participant. The study also reviews the application of artificial intelligence in journalism, examples of its use in Western media, as well as scholarly research and critical perspectives on the topic. In addition, the challenges and limitations encountered during the project are discussed, and recommendations for future research are provided. Finally, the authors assess the potential and risks of using generative artificial intelligence to cover sensitive topics in Kazakh journalism and offer practical recommendations for improving similar projects.
